Llama gestation lasts about 340 to 360 days, averaging near 350. The due date is the breeding date plus the average gestation; the range gives the earliest and latest.

How it works

Counting from breeding

Llama gestation lasts about 340 to 360 days from breeding, about eleven and a half months, with an average near 350 days. The calculator adds the average to the breeding date to estimate the due date, and the 340 to 360 day range gives the earliest and latest you should expect a cria.

Alpacas average a little shorter and llamas a little longer, but 350 days works across camelids; maiden dams may carry slightly longer. Treat the due date as a window of a few days rather than a single fixed day.

How long are llamas pregnant?

Llama gestation runs about 340 to 360 days from breeding, averaging around 350, or about eleven and a half months. Counting from the breeding date gives the most reliable estimate of when a cria are due.

Alpacas average a little shorter and llamas a little longer, but 350 days works across camelids; maiden dams may carry slightly longer.

Stages of pregnancy

The first months show no outward signs. By mid-gestation the dam’s abdomen visibly enlarges, and in the final months the udder develops and the cria can shift position. Llamas are induced ovulators, so the breeding date is precise.

An ultrasound from about day 60 to 90 confirms pregnancy, since roughly a fifth to a third of early pregnancies are lost before day 60.

Preparing for the birth

Move the dam to a clean, quiet area a week or two before the due date and increase energy in the final trimester, when most cria growth happens. Llamas almost always carry a single cria and usually birth in the morning.

Udder filling, pelvic ligament softening and restlessness are signs birthing is near.

When to call the vet

Call a vet if the dam passes about 370 days, or if active labour runs beyond 60 minutes without the cria appearing, since camelid labour is normally quick. This tool is for planning only and does not replace veterinary care.

The formula

Date plus
gestation.

The due date is the breeding date plus about 350 days, with a cria normally arriving between 340 and 360 days.

Questions

Llama gestation questions.

How long is a llama pregnant?

+

About 340 to 360 days from breeding, averaging around 350 days, about eleven and a half months. The calculator uses this to estimate the due date.

How do I calculate a llama due date?

+

Add about 350 days to the breeding date. Enter that date above and the calculator gives the estimated due date plus the earliest and latest.

Can the due date be a few days off?

+

Yes. Alpacas average a little shorter and llamas a little longer, but 350 days works across camelids; maiden dams may carry slightly longer. Treat the result as a window from 340 to 360 days.

When should I contact a vet?

+

Contact a vet if the pregnancy runs well past 360 days, if labour stalls without progress, or if the animal seems distressed. A prenatal check is always worthwhile.

Is this llama calculator free?

+

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, and every calculation runs locally in your browser, so nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
