How it works

One milligram per pound

The widely used guideline for diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, is about 1 mg per pound of a dog’s body weight, given two to three times a day. So a 25-pound dog is usually given around 25 mg per dose, which is one standard 25 mg tablet.

This calculator applies that 1 mg per pound rule and also shows the dose in children’s liquid and a sensible daily maximum. It is a starting guide only: your vet may advise a different dose, and the product must be plain diphenhydramine.

The full guide

The complete guide to Benadryl for dogs.

How the dose is worked out, which product to use, and the important cautions.

How the dose is calculated

The standard veterinary guideline is roughly 1 mg of diphenhydramine per pound of body weight, which is about 2 to 4 mg per kilogram, given every 8 to 12 hours. A 25-pound dog therefore gets about 25 mg per dose, and a 50-pound dog about 50 mg.

Doses are usually rounded to a convenient tablet or measured liquid amount, which is why confirming with your vet matters.

Which product to use

Use only plain Benadryl or generic diphenhydramine. Avoid any combination product that adds a decongestant such as pseudoephedrine, a pain reliever, alcohol, or the sweetener xylitol, all of which can be dangerous or toxic to dogs.

Check the active-ingredients panel and confirm diphenhydramine is the only one before giving anything.

When it is used

Vets commonly suggest diphenhydramine for mild allergies, itching, insect bites or to ease travel anxiety and motion sickness. It often causes drowsiness. It is not suitable for every dog, and certain conditions or other medicines can make it unsafe.

Never give it to cats without veterinary direction, as their dosing and sensitivity differ.

Important cautions

Always confirm the dose, frequency and suitability with your veterinarian, especially for puppies, pregnant dogs, very small or very large dogs, or animals with health conditions. Watch for side effects and stop if your dog seems unwell.

If your dog has a serious reaction, difficulty breathing or facial swelling, treat it as an emergency and contact a vet immediately. This tool is informational and does not replace professional advice.
