How it works

Mass over concentration

Milligrams measure mass and millilitres measure volume, so you cannot convert one to the other without knowing how concentrated the solution is. Concentration, in mg per mL, is the bridge: the volume equals the mass divided by the concentration.

To get 500 mg of a drug from a 250 mg/mL solution, you need 500 divided by 250, which is 2 mL. Change the concentration and the volume changes with it.

Why mg and mL do not convert directly

Milligrams are a unit of mass and millilitres a unit of volume, so there is no fixed conversion between them. A millilitre of water weighs about a gram, but a millilitre of a concentrated solution or a dense liquid weighs something different.

To go between them you need the concentration, which tells you how many milligrams are in each millilitre.

How the conversion works

Once you know the concentration in mg per mL, the volume is just the mass divided by that concentration. For 500 mg at 250 mg/mL, that is 2 mL. To go the other way, multiply a volume by the concentration to get the mass it contains.

Keep the units consistent, milligrams and mg/mL, and the answer comes out in millilitres.

Where it is used

This conversion is everyday work in pharmacy, dosing, chemistry and biology labs, where reagents and drugs are supplied at a known concentration. Working out the volume for a required dose or amount is one of the most common bench calculations.

It also underlies dilutions, where you mix a measured volume of stock with diluent.

A quick caution

Always use the concentration printed on your solution, not an assumed one, and double-check units, since labels sometimes use percent or mg per L instead of mg per mL. A wrong concentration gives a wrong volume.
