How it works

From an hourly rate to a year

Your annual salary from an hourly wage is the rate multiplied by the hours you work each week and by the weeks you work in a year. The calculator then divides that yearly figure back down into monthly, every-two-weeks and weekly pay.

At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week across 52 weeks, that is $52,000 a year, about $4,333 a month or $1,000 a week, before tax.

The full guide

The complete hourly to salary guide.

How to convert a wage to a salary, what changes the total, and gross versus take-home pay.

How to convert hourly to salary

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you work in a year. For most full-time work that is 40 hours and 52 weeks, which gives 2,080 hours a year. The result is your gross annual salary.

To go from salary back to hourly, divide the yearly figure by those same 2,080 hours.

What changes the yearly number

Three things move the total: the hourly rate, the hours each week and the weeks worked. Overtime, part-time hours or unpaid leave all change the figure, so adjust the hours and weeks to match your real schedule.

If you take two weeks of unpaid time off, set the weeks to 50 to see the effect on the salary.

Gross versus take-home pay

This calculator shows gross salary, the amount before tax and other deductions. Your take-home, or net, pay is lower once income tax and any contributions come out, and how much lower depends on where you live.

Treat the annual figure as the headline number for comparing jobs, not the amount that lands in your account.

Why convert at all

A yearly salary is the figure lenders, landlords and job adverts use, so converting an hourly wage lets you compare roles and judge affordability. It also makes budgeting easier, because you can see the monthly and weekly amounts at a glance.

Use the breakdown to plan around the pay schedule you actually receive.

The formula

salary.

A salary is just an hourly rate scaled across the hours and weeks you work, then split back down into monthly and weekly pay.
