How it works

Counting from mating

A cat’s pregnancy, or queening, lasts about 63 to 67 days, roughly nine weeks, with an average close to 65 days. The calculator adds the average gestation to the mating date to estimate the due date, and the 63 to 67 day range gives the earliest and latest you should expect kittens.

If you know the mating date, this is the simplest way to plan. Litters can arrive a few days either side, so treat the date as a window rather than a fixed day.

How long cats are pregnant, the stages to expect, and when to see a vet.

How long are cats pregnant?

Feline gestation runs about 63 to 67 days from mating, averaging around 65, or roughly nine weeks. Because cats can mate more than once over a few days, the exact conception date is not always clear, which is why a range is more honest than a single day.

Shorthaired breeds sometimes deliver slightly earlier and longhaired slightly later, but most fall in the same window.

Stages of pregnancy

In the first few weeks there are few outward signs, though some queens show pinking-up of the nipples around three weeks. By the fifth and sixth weeks the abdomen visibly swells, and in the final fortnight you can often feel or see the kittens moving.

A vet can confirm pregnancy by palpation from around three to four weeks, or earlier with ultrasound.

Preparing for the birth

Provide a quiet, warm nesting box in a private spot a week or two before the due date, and keep feeding a good-quality diet, increasing food in late pregnancy. Most queens deliver without help.

Watch for nesting behaviour, restlessness and a drop in appetite in the final day, which often signal that labour is near.

When to call the vet

Contact a vet if the pregnancy goes much beyond 67 to 70 days, if your cat strains for more than about 20 to 30 minutes without producing a kitten, or if there is heavy bleeding or obvious distress. A prenatal check-up is always worthwhile.

Questions

Cat pregnancy questions.

How long is a cat pregnant?

+

About 63 to 67 days from mating, averaging around 65 days, which is roughly nine weeks. The calculator uses this to estimate the due date.

How do I calculate my cat’s due date?

+

Add about 65 days to the mating date. Enter the mating date above and the calculator gives the estimated due date plus the earliest and latest.

Can the due date be a few days off?

+

Yes. Cats can mate over several days and individuals vary, so kittens normally arrive anywhere from 63 to 67 days. Treat the date as a window.

When should I see a vet?

+

See a vet if your cat passes about 67 to 70 days, strains a long time without delivering, or seems distressed. A prenatal check-up is always a good idea.

Is this cat pregnancy calculator free?

+

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, and every calculation runs locally in your browser, so nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
